Building Code Information
Requires a Permit
An owner or owner representative who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure; erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace any gas, mechanical, electrical, or plumbing system or other equipment, the installation of which is regulated by the code; or cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building official and obtain the required permit. Building permits are required for all window replacement, reroofing, and residing.

No Permit Required
The following work is exempt from the permit requirements but must still meet application provisions of the St. Joseph Code of Ordinances:
  • One-story detached accessory structures, used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses, and similar uses, provided the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet
  • Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops, and similar finish work
  • Movable cases, counters, and partitions not over 5 feet, 9 inches in height
  • Window awnings supported on an exterior wall of a house or garage
